Prizewinning student lands forestry job before graduating

Felix GregoryFelix GregoryProviding a good impression whilst on a professional placement led to a full-time job for a Bangor University student before graduating.

Not only will Felix Gregory, 22, from Liskeard, Cornwall graduate with a first class BSc degree in Forestry, he will also receive a Royal Forestry Society bursary for completing the best undergraduate forestry dissertation.

Between his second and third year, Felix, a former Devonport High School for Boys, went on a professional placement at at their Brecon office. The company specialises in woodland management covering 50,000 acres from Buckinghamshire to Cornwall, and Wales and the Marches. The company manages properties which are remarkably diverse, ranging from tiny Sites of Special Scientific Interest to extensive plantations, and from small farm woodlands to whole estates.

Many of the at Pryor & Rickett Silviculture are Bangor University Alumni, including the Managing Director, Graham Taylor MBE, who graduated with a forestry degree in 1990.

Mr Taylor said: 鈥淢y own sandwich year with the Forestry Commission really helped to embed the knowledge learned at Bangor and apply it to real life forest management conditions. We were highly impressed with Felix鈥檚 attitude, and aptitude, and he had clearly benefited from 2 good years鈥 high-quality forestry teaching at Bangor before starting on his sandwich year placement. The solid year that he put in gave us confidence in him and his future as a forest manager with Pryor & Rickett Silviculture.鈥

Coming from a rural background, Felix has always wanted to work in the environmental sector and to contribute to the good management and guardianship of natural resources, so he鈥檚 鈥渄elighted to be able to do this鈥.

Felix said: 鈥淭he professional placement year was exciting and immensely valuable, and it enabled me to put what I鈥檇 learnt in lectures into practice and build on my skills in a professional environment. I made some great contacts and I鈥檓 extremely grateful that I was offered a job with the host company at the end of the placement.

鈥淚 thoroughly enjoyed my time at Bangor and getting to know north Wales and all the adventures it offers, whilst working with other students and lecturers who are so passionate about the subject. It鈥檚 a great feeling to be graduating and I鈥檓 looking forward to moving on, and to carry all that I have learnt from my time at Bangor.鈥
