Riaz began her career as a Chartered Accountant, gaining substantial experience as both an Operational Director and Company Accountant. She later transitioned into education, teaching A-level Accounting and Economics via video conferencing in the late 1990s—well ahead of the curve in using cutting-edge technology for remote learning. Demonstrating her entrepreneurial spirit, Riaz also founded and managed a distance learning company, delivering A-level courses to schools across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
In January 2018, she joined Bangor Business School as a Lecturer in Accounting, contributing to undergraduate programmes. Prior to this, she served as an Associate Lecturer for ACCA professional qualifications, delivering modules including Financial Management, Financial Reporting, Advanced Auditing and Assurance, Advanced Performance Management, and Strategic Business Reporting to industry professionals. With over two decades of experience, Riaz brings a wealth of expertise in both academic and professional education, and has collaborated with numerous Higher Education Institutions to design and deliver online modules at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Her dedication to teaching excellence has been consistently recognised. In July 2020, she was awarded Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), and in May 2021, she was shortlisted for the Student-Led Teaching Awards (STLA), earning recognition as one of the university’s top educators. This was followed by the Bangor University Teaching Fellowship in July 2021, and a nomination for the prestigious National Teaching Fellowship (NTF) in October of the same year. In February 2022, her sustained impact and leadership in education were acknowledged with the Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA).
In May 2023, Riaz was nominated by Bangor Business School students for the Teacher of the Year award. Most recently, in 2024, she completed the highly regarded Aurora Women in Leadership programme—an achievement that further underscores her commitment to leadership development and empowering others in the sector.
Continuing this strong trajectory, in May 2025, Riaz was once again nominated for both the Teacher of the Year and Unsung Hero awards—testament to her enduring impact and the high regard in which she is held by students and colleagues alike.
