Sticky Rice, Sachets and Smiles: A Joyful Celebration of the Dragon Boat Festival!
There was a lively atmosphere of curiosity, laughter, and delicious aromas today as a special Zongzi and sachet-making workshop was held to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival.
The event brought together a vibrant mix of Bangor University students and local families for an afternoon of hands-on fun, cultural storytelling, fragrant sachets and sticky rice! Participants discovered the origins and customs of the Dragon Boat Festival before trying their hand at the careful, calming (and slightly fiddly!) art of making zongzi — the traditional bamboo-leaf-wrapped rice parcels that mark the occasion — as well as crafting beautiful, scented sachets, often associated with the festival for their protective and symbolic meaning.
For many, it was a first-time experience, but that did not dampen the enthusiasm. With plenty of focus and laughter, children and adults alike folded, filled and tied their zongzi and sachets, ready to take home and enjoy.
The workshop offered more than just a taste of Chinese tradition — it sparked cultural exchange, brought stories to life, and created a warm sense of connection across generations and backgrounds.
We are so pleased with how well the event went and would like to thank everyone who joined us. It is always a joy to see people connect through food, tradition and shared curiosity.
Keep an eye out for more cultural workshops and events — everyone is welcome!
